How do I set up bitcoin inheritance?

Give your family a rehearsed, non-custodial recovery path so your bitcoin reaches the right people — without sharing a seed phrase today.

A sealed envelope with a seed phrase is not a plan.

Sharing a seed phrase gives full access to your bitcoin immediately — while you're still alive. Savel's inheritance approach uses a separate recovery key that alone cannot move your funds. It only works together with Savel's Key when recovery is triggered.

What you'll need

  • • A Savel multisig wallet
  • • A trusted family member or contact (one heir per wallet)

Step-by-step guide

1

Create a wallet

Create your 2-of-3 multisig wallet with Savel. This generates your Key, a Family Recovery Key for your heirs, and Savel's co-signing key.

2

Navigate to wallet security

Go to the wallet security settings in your member area. Here you can configure your inheritance plan.

3

Set the inheritance lock period

Choose the security lock period. When a recovery is triggered, we try to reach you first during this period. You have a chance to stop it if it is not the time.

4

Set the inheritance email

Register the heir's email so we know who is allowed to contact us. You can set one heir per wallet — solving the multiple persons inheritance solution.

Tip: Rehearse the recovery process with your heirs annually. Savel's plan includes an heir onboarding walkthrough and support for the recovery event, so there's no guesswork when the time comes.
