Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Savel's non-custodial multisig, inheritance, and key security.
General
What is Savel?+
Savel is a global digital security company that helps individuals and companies self-custody bitcoin with maximum security.
We use a non-custodial 2-of-3 multisig setup with independent keys — eliminating single points of failure while you stay in full control. We never take custody of your funds.
What is safe self-custody?+
Safe self-custody means you hold your own keys and control your bitcoin, while Savel provides expert guidance and co-signing support.
We help you set up, maintain, and recover your wallet — without ever taking custody of your funds.
Do I need technical skills?+
No. We guide you through the initial key setup and provide ongoing support.
Everything uses standard hardware wallets and open Bitcoin standards.
Wallets & Transactions
What is a Wallet?+
A Wallet uses automated transaction signing with Savel's software key.
Savel's key is encrypted and stored online so transactions that match your security rules (like daily limits and time delays) can be co-signed automatically. To make it a cold wallet, you keep your own keys on offline hardware devices. Ideal for regular spending while maintaining multisig security.
What is an Air-Gapped Vault?+
An Air-Gapped Vault provides maximum security for long-term storage.
Savel's key is an air-gapped key — stored on an offline device that never touches the internet. Every transaction requires manual approval from you and Savel, making it ideal for large amounts or savings you don't access frequently. Keep your own keys on cold hardware devices for even greater security.
How does automated signing work?+
With Wallets, you set security parameters and Savel's software key signs automatically when they match.
You configure limits like maximum transaction amounts and daily limits. When you create a transaction that meets these rules, Savel's software key automatically provides the second signature after verifying it matches your security settings. You're always in control of the rules.
How does manual approval work?+
With Air-Gapped Vaults, every transaction requires explicit approval from you and Savel.
You create a transaction request, review it carefully, and manually sign it with your device. Savel's air-gapped key is then used to provide the second signature. This extra step ensures maximum security for high-value transactions.
Can I have both types of wallets?+
Yes. Many users maintain both a Wallet and an Air-Gapped Vault.
Use a Wallet for regular transactions and an Air-Gapped Vault for long-term savings. Your plan determines how many wallets of each type you can create.
Do you support 3-of-5 multisig for businesses?+
Yes. Air-Gapped Pro supports multisig setups up to 3-of-5, with Savel holding 1 key.
Businesses and shared treasuries can choose 2-of-3, 3-of-4, 3-of-5, or 4-of-5. Savel always holds a single key and co-signs only with your approval, so no single person or party can move company funds alone.
Plans & Limits
What plans do you offer?+
We offer two types of services: Wallets with automated signing and Air-Gapped Vaults with manual approval.
Each service has multiple tiers with different wallet and transaction limits. Visit our plans page to see the full details and choose what works best for you.
What counts as a transaction?+
Each time you send bitcoin, it counts as one transaction.
For Wallets, this includes automated transactions. For Air-Gapped Vaults, this includes manually approved transactions. The limit resets each year.
What happens if I reach my transaction limit?+
You'll receive a notification when you're approaching your limit.
Once reached, you have two options: buy an extra transaction pack for a one-off boost, or upgrade to a higher plan to permanently raise your limits. Alternatively, wait until the start of the next year when the limit resets. Existing wallets remain accessible — only new transactions are restricted.
Can I upgrade my plan?+
Yes, you can upgrade at any time.
When you upgrade, you immediately get access to the higher plan's wallet and transaction limits. Your new billing cycle starts from the upgrade date. If you only need a short-term boost, you can buy an extra transaction pack instead.
Do transaction limits apply to receiving bitcoin?+
No. Transaction limits only apply when you send bitcoin.
You can receive unlimited transactions regardless of your plan.
Security
Can Savel access my bitcoin?+
No. The wallet requires 2 of 3 signatures and we only hold one.
Without your Key (or your Family Recovery Key) we cannot move a single satoshi.
What happens if Savel disappears?+
You still have 2 of 3 keys: your Key and your Family Recovery Key.
You can recover your bitcoin using any standard multisig software — no dependency on Savel.
What if a key is stolen?+
A single stolen key is useless on its own.
Your bitcoin requires two signatures to move. If a key is ever compromised, we help you immediately transfer your funds to a new wallet with fresh keys.
Caution: If you suspect a key has been compromised, move your funds to a new wallet with a fresh set of keys as soon as possible.
Is my automated signing secure?+
Yes. Even with automated signing, you define the security rules.
Transactions must match your configured limits and time delays. Savel's system verifies each transaction against your rules before signing. If anything doesn't match, the transaction is rejected and you're notified.
How secure is the air-gapped setup?+
Air-gapped storage is among the most secure bitcoin storage methods.
In an Air-Gapped Vault, Savel's key lives on a device that never connects to the internet, making it immune to remote hacking. Transactions are manually reviewed and signed, providing an additional security layer. For maximum protection, keep your own keys on cold hardware devices too.
Keys & Recovery
How do the 3 keys work?+
Your bitcoin is protected by three independent keys.
Key 1 is your Key on your signing device. Key 2 is Savel's Key (a software or air-gapped key). Key 3 is your Family Recovery Key. Any two keys can authorize a transaction — so losing one key doesn't mean losing your bitcoin.
Is my seed phrase ever shared with Savel?+
Never. You generate your keys on your own hardware.
Savel only knows the public information required to co-sign transactions.
Can I recover if I lose a key?+
Yes, you can recover from the loss of any single key.
If you lose your Key, your Family Recovery Key plus Savel's Key can recover your funds. If you lose your Family Recovery Key, your Key plus Savel's Key can create a new backup.
Inheritance
What happens to my bitcoin if I die without a plan?+
Your bitcoin may be lost forever. The network does not recognize death certificates or court orders — no keys, no funds.
Without a proper inheritance plan, your bitcoin may never reach the right people. Heirs often cannot recover funds from multisig wallets without guided support. Setting up inheritance while you're alive ensures your crypto reaches who it should.
Caution: Inheritance planning is not legal advice. Consult a lawyer or estate planner for your specific situation.
How does inheritance work?+
You register one heir per wallet with their email. They hold only the backup key.
When recovery is triggered, we try to reach you first during the security lock period. You have a chance to stop it if it is not the time. Only then does Savel co-sign with the heir to recover the funds. The heir holds only the backup key — it cannot move funds without our co-signature.
What is the family recovery key?+
The Family Recovery Key is a backup key stored with a trusted family member.
It's created offline and cannot move your bitcoin on its own — it only works together with Savel's Key. The heir holds only this key, which alone cannot access your funds.
Why not just share my seed phrase with family?+
Sharing a seed phrase gives full access to your bitcoin immediately — while you're still alive.
It can be lost, stolen, or misused. The Family Recovery Key alone cannot move funds, so your family can hold it safely without compromising your security today.
Caution: Never give anyone your full seed phrase. The family recovery key alone cannot move your bitcoin.
Can I set up inheritance for multiple people?+
Yes. You can set one heir per wallet.
This solves the multiple persons inheritance solution — each wallet has its own designated heir with their email on file. We know who is allowed to contact us for each wallet.
